Women Who Rock: Smashing Pumpkins Edition

Hey guise. I thought some of you might be tired of reading Caroline's long posts about her weird feelings
(-__________-) so I thought I would come along and save y'all by writing longer and weirder posts! omg i luv teh int3rn3t

aight so a month or so ago I downloaded (lol vuze ftw) the entire discography of Smashing Pumpkins and thus began the descent into madness that is a Billy Corgan obsession. I know it's a little late but #bettalatethanneva #YOLO n all that. Somewhere around the point at which I put Spaceboy on YoutubeRepeat (It's A Thing, Guys) and opened up that yung Wikipedia page on the band, I realized that maybe someone should honor the unsung heros of SmashPump (lol thats not a thing i just made it up)-- THE HELLA FEMALE BASSISTS. Apparently BillCorg (see prev. note) had a thing for awesome female bassists with hella style! So lucky for you guys I officially began the first installment of a new segment on goodbye-ponytails which honors women who simultaneously rock in the cool sense, rock in the music sense, and rock rad stylez all at the same time!

First up: Ginger Pooley/ Sling/ Reyes

Joining SP in 2007, Ginger is the most recent of SP's female bassists. She left in 2010. She was born in Chi-city (REP) and was previously in the all-woman pop-punk band Halo Friendlies (1998-2002). You can snag Ginger's style by wearing tight, cropped wifebeaters with a big-ol Punk Belt, tight babydoll dresses, hella tutus, and Not Giving A Fuq. Don't forget that pompadour action-- hers reach gr8 heights because they're filled with attitude.

Melissa Auf der Maur

Melissa reps from Quebec and was with Smashing Pumpkins for its 2000 tour, right after her contract expired with HOLE!!! ok calm down guise srsly. She has hella solo work in music as well as photography! Her photographs were featured in NYLON!! ok guise i k its ur fave mag but srsly calm down. Capture the Auf der Maur look by wearing hella structured/babydoll/sleeveless blouses. Take some scissors to a fave/not-so-fave tshirt or do what I like to do-- turn lingerie from Village Discount into Actual Shirts! Don't forget the shaggy fur coat, printed maxi-dress, and velvet belt! If you're still jeallin' of Melissa's rad hair (yeah we see you FLORENCE WELCH tryna steal her swAg) grab some dye from your local walgreens and a 1" curler. or buy a wig! cause lowkey that shits gawn be hard as hell 2 emulate! THIS chick shoulda been named ginger!!

Paz Lenchantin

Paz was the bassist for Billy Corgan's post-SP band, Zwon. She reps from Argentina and after she peaced out from Zwon, created a female supergroup with some other sweet female musicians! Rad! You can rock out Paz-style by getting some sweet baby t's from Village Discount (my favorite place to do such a thing), snagging some chiffon-y or ethereal-yet-grungy skirts from your mom, stocking up on those peasant dresses/blouses from also your mom, and feelin' proud of your badonk (unless you're caroline lol) in patterned/pinstriped hotpants. Grow your hair out to your butt and if its too straight, no worries-- just pull a Paz! Braid it in two-inch thick braids while its wet, let it dry, and then comb it out into wavy, hippie awesomeness. PEACE.

Style Icon: Hope Sandoval

Hope Sandoval is a really rockin' woman and the female half of the band Mazzy Star. You've probably heard their really great song Fade Into You from their 1993 album So Tonight That I Might See. You probably haven't heard their song Blue Light that's also really great. Their music is chill and slow and something you could (and I often do) fall asleep to, but also deeply angsty in that 90s I-don't-even-care-enough-to-raise-my-voice kind of way. In other words, it's incredible. And its largely due to Hope Sandoval's angelic and ethereal voice. According to the band's Wikipedia page, Hope has a "shy personality" and during concerts "prefers to sing in near-darkness with only a dim backlight." Sobasically she's probably one of those people whom you don't realize are cooler than you because they never speak, but when they do it's something Really Really Deep and Cool. And then they move to OPRF and become BFFs with Tavi.
.....Anyway, Hope also had incredible style way back in the nineties (I mean, she probably still does, but let's face it, OLD PEOPLE ARE GROSS). Pay special attention to her long, flowy skirts (and hair), her midriff-exposing crop-tops which are many times just button-downs unbuttoned at the bottom, and babydoll dresses. Not to mention her waifish figure, huge wide-set eyes, and totally great eyebrows. Hope is perfect girlcrush material/style inspiration for midterms when I'm angsty but also too emo to be angry and loud about it. Fade on.

Style Icon: Lady Pink

Lady Pink (AKA Sandra Fabara AKA Queen Of My World) (I made that last one up) is widely considered to be the first female graffiti artist EVER. Apparently she was born in Ecuador and raised in Queens (that's where the Queens come from) and went to this really rad high school that I'm lowkey bout to transfer to called High School of Art & Design. She started tagging in the 80s when she was 15 so if you're older than that you better quit because Second Youngest Female Graffiti Artist Ever isn't gonna look so good on them yung college apps :,,( She was also in this cool movie (that is now #1 on my netflix queue) about hip-hop culture called Wild Style. Also her first show was called Femme-Fatales. Also she hella collab'd with fellow female artist Jenny Holzer  who, among a whole bunch of amazing things, designed feminist/socially conscious t-shirts that Lady Pink was photographed in, so obvs she has rad style! What more could you want?!??! a b-rated rapper with a hilariously similar name? DONE.
